Renata Saha’s journey toward a Ph.D. degree in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) began with her passion to bring affordable health monitoring services to the masses.
During Saha's undergraduate years at the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, India, she ideated and realized a wristband prototype for measuring health parameters, leading to the development of her own company. Realizing that it was necessary for her to master technology at a deeper level to maximize her impact, Saha looked to the University of Minnesota's ECE program and its history of medical devices innovation. Knowing that one of her inspirations, Earl E. Bakken, was an ECE alumnus sealed her decision to attend the University.
Under the guidance of Professor Jian-Ping Wang, Saha received a three-year CSE fellowship. Her other awards include the Women in Technology Scholarship 2021-22 from Cadence Design Systems and the Graduate Neuromodulation Research Fellowship 2022-23 from Minnesota’s Discovery, Research and InnoVation Economy (MnDRIVE).
Saha was and named one of the Rising Stars in EECS 2022 by University of Texas, Austin and was elected an iREDEFINE Fellow 2022 by Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association. She has published more 27 journal articles, three U.S. patents, and two book chapters. She received her Ph.D. in 2023.
Saha intends to resume her role as an entrepreneur in the health care space emphasizing affordability once she has further gained experience in industry research and development. Additionally, she is accomplished in the Indian classical dance form of Odissi and loves baking, swimming and classical music.
Her advice to aspiring graduate students is to be passionate, deliberate, and clear-eyed on future goals, and to build a community of friends beyond the work environment.
